Two Providence restaurants and a Johnston bakery made a national list of the best gluten-free restaurants in the United States
Pane e Vino and Malted Barley were both in USA Today’s Top 10 Readers Awards for Best Gluten-Free Restaurants. Three Wishes Bakery made the top 10 list of the accompanying Best Gluten Free Bakeries.
All three deserve a round of applause for serving food that is safe to be eaten by those with celiac disease or celiac disease. All three were first selected by a panel of experts before being voted on by readers. They were recognized for taking great care to prevent cross-contamination as well as for presenting innovative and varied menus.
While they prove that gluten-free cuisine can be great, there are other restaurants and businesses in Rhode Island that serve gluten-free diners well. So here’s more about the three winners and five runners-up that deserve a look.
Bread and wine
How ironic is it that Pane e Vino, number 3 on USA Today’s best list, has the name bread (pane in Italian) in its name? Part of the DeQuattro Restaurant Group, the restaurant has a full gluten-free menu.

Malted barley

“The Malted Barley offers a selection of gluten-free sandwiches and soft pretzels. House-made options include both sweet and savory varieties, from a BLT pretzel sandwich to a sweet cinnamon and sugar pretzel,” USA Today wrote.
All the sandwiches can be made on a gluten-free vegan pretzel. These include blueberries and brie, grilled cheese, hummus, bratwurst and caprese. As for drinks, they have gluten-free ciders from Downeast in Boston and Citizen Cider in Vermont.
